Obama: Isolating Cuba hasn't worked

"I believe we can do more to support the Cuban people, and promote our values, through engagements. After all, these 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked. It's time for a new approach."

In theory, I've always said, "the sanctions have not yet accomplished their intended purpose."
In practice, I have to admit that the President has a point... continuing policies that have not produced the intended change after 50 years is the definition of insanity.

Put me on the side of the fence with reluctantly supporting the president on this one.
I say reluctantly because I've always been a supporter of continuing the sanctions and is therefore a change of position for me, not because it's Obama making the change.

"This expression by President Barack Obama deserves the respect and recognition by all the people and I want to thank and recognize support from the Vatican and especially from Pope Francis for the improvement of relations between Cuba and the United States," he said.

Will this make the atheists go all berzerk and cry this is the Church influencing policy too much?

Generally, I think its been time for quite awhile to loosen our Cuba policies. Reagan did a great job of bringing the Cold War to a close, and Cuba is the last remnant of that era.

alas that will take the congress to repeal the Helms–Burton Act in order to import them, however with looser travel restrictions you might be able to fly there and smoke them.

The Pope is also a head of state with lots of influence, also this Pope has a huge non Catholic fan base due to him calling out rich cardinals and lots of his other actions.

Frequent "Morning Joe" guest and prototypical douchebag Donny Deutch got his comeuppance on the Cuba issue from Florida Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R) this morning. Donny was left fuming but speechless. Diaz-Balart showed he is nimble and forceful in dealing with a flaming Lib. I'd like to see more of D-B. Newsbusters.org has the transcript and video.
