NILES -- Niles brothers Ronald and Donald Wheeler were arraigned Monday on animal abandonment/cruelty charges stemming from the recent discovery of 10 cats in a house on South 14th Street that, according to police, had no accessible food or water.

The men, both 65, demanded preliminary hearings on one count each of the four-year felony. Those hearings are anticipated July 9.

Bond was set by the Berrien County Trial Court at 10 percent of $5,000. A condition of their bond is that they not own or possess animals.

The investigation at the home in the 900 block of South 14th began June 20 after a neighbor noticed a sick kitten just outside the residence and called police. The cat was in such poor condition it was euthanized at the Berrien Animal Control facility in Berrien Center. A dead cat was found in the yard as well, police said.

The following morning, a search warrant was executed and 10 more cats allegedly were discovered inside the residence without food and water. Those animals also were picked up by Animal Control and were described by Director Val Grimes as being in "pretty decent shape.''

A notice was posted deeming the residence unfit for occupancy.
