'Dancing With the Stars' Cast Without Stars

The new "DWTS" cast is less than sizzling
ABC/Adam Larkey

Let's face it. It would be hard to top the Season 11 excitement of Jennifer Grey reconnecting with her "Dirty Dancing" past and Bristol Palin's buzzy third-place finish. But by all accounts, the "DWTS" cast for Season 12 is, well, a stumble.

The biggest problem with the 11 contestants of the dance competition: Where are the actual "stars"? Many bloggers are complaining that the lineup is hardly must-see. The cast includes "Fat Actress" Kirstie Alley, former boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, TV talk-show host Wendy Williams, the original "Karate Kid" Ralph Macchio, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, and Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson.

Movieline's Christopher Rosen complained, "It's always easy to harp on 'Dancing With the Stars' for having precious few stars, but this feels particularly egregious."

The new cycle includes outliers that will hardly be recognizable to most viewers -- such as "Psycho" Mike Catherwood, a co-host of the radio program "Loveline." Also competing this season is the rap artist Romeo, newbie Disney Channel actor Chelsea Kane, supermodel Petra Nemcova, and wrestler Chris Jericho.
:? :confusion-shrug:

Even the pros won't be as sizzling this season. Derek Hough -- the fancy-footed dancer who partnered with winner Grey last season -- will be taking a break for Season 12.

The cast managed to leave The New York Times cold: "The roster of semi- and never-were-celebs for the 12th season of that popular reality competition may not include anyone as instantly fascinating as, say, Bristol Palin."

Kirstie Alley Falls on 'Dancing With the Stars'

In what will have serious weight jokes to follow, Monday night's performance of Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy had a major fall with the cameras rolling. In a live performance that had everyone in the audience expecting the worst as the worry of the contestant and her dance partner might be seriously hurt as Kirstie Alley fell.

"My thigh just gave out...I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry," Maks said after the performance. "It has nothing to do with her." According to the pro dancer, he had a muscle strain and it caused his leg to give out.

As with anything in Hollywood, the show must go on and even though Maks made faces that appeared to show him in immense pain, he didn't give in to stopping but kept right on going until the song was over.

Dancing With The Stars: Hines Ward dances to victory

By Hal Boedeker Sentinel Staff Writer
"Dancing With the Stars" anointed another winner Tuesday night, and it was a popular choice.

He praised dance partner Kym Johnson for taking a football player who had never danced before and helping him make the finals. "I owe it all to Kym," he said. "She's an amazing teacher."

Johnson had escaped serious injury earlier this season when he fell on her neck during rehearsal.

Ward thanked the judges for "constructive criticism and helping us get better each week." Ward thanked the fans, especially Steeler Nation.

Emmy winner Kirstie Alley placed second, and Disney Channel actress Chelsea Kane was third.

The last three couples performed their favorite dances Tuesday night, and the judges gave each a perfect score. Ward and Johnson performed the samba.

"I think you are the MVP of 'Dancing With the Stars' season 12," judge Carrie Ann Inaba told Ward. "Mr. Irresistible," judge Bruno Tonioli called him.

Alley returned to the cha-cha, her first dance from the season. Judges Len Goodman and Tonioli agreed it was her best dance this season.

Kane and Mark Ballas repeated their Viennese waltz with a Harry Potter theme. The judges lavishly praised her skill.

"Dancing" ended its season with splashy production numbers that brought back celebrities ejected earlier in the season. Model Petra Nemcova danced to music from surprise guest Josh Groban, who sang "You Lift Me Up." Boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and pro wrestler Chris Jericho faced off in another production number.

Sara Evans and the Go-Go's performed, and Sarah Palin could be spotted in the studio audience. The two-hour finale is likely to be a huge ratings draw for ABC.
