The family posted signage in the window of the JMS Building in downtown South Bend when renovations began a few months ago. Unless you've dined at the Cedar House, however, you might not have recognized the restaurant owner's name.

Or made a connection.

The new Pedro's Family Restaurant, which opened Monday at 110 N. Main St., South Bend, is owned by the same family who formerly operated the Cedar House.

For the past three years, Pedro Dominguez has been serving customers at the Cedar House, located at 808 E. Colfax Ave. with his daughter, Olga, and other family members. They recently decided to relocate to this smaller space, north of the new Main Street Cafe, to be closer to their customer base.

And the difference is already being felt closer to downtown.

“It's kind of a surprise because that restaurant is not far from here,” Olga Dominguez, restaurant manager, says about the several blocks separating the new restaurant from the Cedar House, which is located on the east side of the St. Joseph River and is now listed on the market.

“But now people don't have to walk as far,” she says about the new 80-seat location. The family tore down walls and brought in all new kitchen equipment and seating because the space formerly contained a day care and attorney's office.

Daily specials have been added to the menu, as well as new Italian entrees like spaghetti with meatballs. Otherwise, customers will still be able to order their favorite foods at Pedro's, including the well-known skillet entree, tacos and burritos.

An average lunch with a drink costs about $9, and dinner costs about $13.

Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Weekend hours may be adjusted in the future based on customer demand.
