16 Foodie Forum: Sneak peek at South Bend Brew Werks

Posted: Thu 7:43 AM, Aug 14, 2014

In this edition of 16 Foodie Forum we discussed something new, something that’s thriving and a local product you might not know about. Our own Ms. Foodie, Michele Scherpenberg, joined us Thursday morning.

South Bend Brew Werks

We got a sneak peek inside the new South Bend Brew Werks, located at 216 S. Michigan St. in South Bend.

The brewery is planning a preview event this Saturday, Aug. 16. They plan to have a beer garden set up outside where people can sample 5 Brew Werks beers, with the purchase of a logo glass for $10. They will also have samples of their farm to fork (locally grown and harvested) menu available for $5.

“It’s a great place, they’re using a lot of sustainability products,” said Scherpenberg. The chairs, for example, are old school chairs.

Due to a few delays and setbacks South Bend Brew Werks is still working on a grand opening date but it will be soon. The mug club mugs are made by a local artist and are larger than the regular glasses. Mug club members will get dibs on experimental taps, discounts on merchandise and invitations to exclusive events.
For every pint of beer sold, South Bend Brew Werks will donate 50 cents to three local organizations: The Music Village, Neighbor Resources Connection or LaCasa de Amistad. The owner, Andrew Elegante, says he and his crew believe in sustainability and community. The pub is built with reclaimed resources from the floors to the walls.

Bar Bici – Opening on August 18 at 10:30 a.m., located at 1233 N. Eddy St. Watch for an exclusive preview coming up on 16 Morning News on Monday. This is an Italian concept from the people who brought you Hacienda.

Simonini Gourmet - Opening soon in Granger at Centennial Place, between Grape and Main St., though a date has not been announced.

J.W. Chens

J.W. Chens, a popular and well established Chinese restaurant, has been located at 1835 S. Bend Ave. in South Bend for the past 8 years, and previously in Elkhart for 15. Jean Chen, the owner, takes a personal approach with every person who dines at her restaurant. Don’t be surprised if she sits down at your table and personally take your order. She will discuss if you have any food allergies, diet restrictions or things you may love or not love in your food. There is no MSG used in any of her food.

Fun fact: They order 150 lb. of fresh green beans per week and sit down when there is a lull and pinch the ends. Then the beans are off to the back to be used in a variety of dishes.

On August 21st at 6 p.m. Epicureans Unite is hosting a dinner called ‘Dinner with Jean’ to thank Jean for being a favorite in the community. The restaurants seats about 50 and if you would like to attend just visit the Epicureans Unite Facebook page to RSVP. They do expect it to fill up.

Macri’s Italian Bakery

George Macri has been the owner of the bakery/deli and restaurant for 36 years. They’re located at 214 N. Niles Ave in South Bend. They have recently revamped the deli area to include made-to-order deli sandwiches and pizza.

They offer a product you might not know about. There is a stand up freezer case where you can find handmade raviolis, lasagna, meatballs and more that are fresh frozen and can be heated up for a quick and easy meal.

You can learn more from Ms. Foodie by going to her web site, Epicureans Unite.

I've been helping out at the Brew Werks and i'm very excited for it. There are a few people trying to improve this city and i think the more we can support them the better.

Are you the guy who has been filling up my trash dumpster and leaving the alley my patrons enter full of junk?
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

No? You'd have to talk to Drew, Greg or Joel about that.

"Outstanding" is my evaluation of the current radio ads for Carmela's at Macri's.
