Grotto at Notre Dame catches on fire
SBT24/7 News Report
A small fire in the grotto on the University of Notre Dame campus was quickly extinguished Monday.
University spokesman Dennis Brown tells SBT24/7 News that the fire broke out in early evening in the grotto, a landmark where campus visitors and the community often come to reflect, and often light prayer candles.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined and remains under investigation, Brown said.
No one was injured.
Brown said that damage to the grotto is being assessed, and the university doesn't know yet what types of equipment replacement or repairs might be necessary.
The interior of the Grotto has been closed while officials determine if it is safe to enter. Visitors may still pray at the perimeter of the shrine.
According to an excerpt of "Notre Dame's Grotto" posted on the school's website, the grotto caught fire in September 1985 when it was loaded with candles.
Writer Dorothy Corson said Notre Dame was playing Michigan State that weekend.
Built in 1896, Notre Dame's Grotto is one-seventh the size of the famed French shrine where it is beleived that the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette on 18 occasions in 1858.
