83-year marriage comes to an end

ROMEO, Mich. (AP) -- A 102-year-old woman who was married for 83 years to a man she met in a rural Michigan church has died.

Victoria Wrubel died Monday at Angelica's Place in Romeo.

She grew up in the largely Polish community of Parisville, an unincorporated village in Huron County in Michigan's rural Thumb region.

In a March interview, Steve Wrubel told the Detroit Free Press that he fell in love with Victoria Puvalowski after the two met as children at St. Mary Catholic Church.

The 103-year-old retired autoworker said he remembers her as "this little girl with curly hair."

Yvonne Essenmacher said her aunt and uncle came from good, strong stock.

"Longevity is a big part of the family," said Essenmacher, who lives in Macomb County's Washington Township.

There is no heart disease or diabetes, no high cholesterol, no cancer for either of them, Steve Wrubel said.

"All I take is aspirin sometimes when my back hurts," he said.

They were married Sept. 28, 1929, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ubly, Mich.

The couple lived in Mount Morris, Mich., after Steve retired from General Motors. They later moved to Holiday, Fla., where Victoria had most recently been in a rehabilitation center. They moved back to Michigan a few weeks ago so they could be near family and live together.
