Darien Long, Atlanta 'Mall Cop', To Receive More Than $22,000 After Controversial Video Goes Viral

The Huffington Post | By Andres Jauregui Posted: 02/04/2013 3:16 pm EST | Updated: 02/07/2013 10:28 am EST

Property manager Darien Long is the beneficiary of a crowdfunding project after videos he filmed at an Atlanta mall went viral on Reddit

Some call him the "Kick-Ass Mall Cop," but Darien Long, property manager at downtown Atlanta's Metro Mall, claims he's just trying to keep the peace.

"What you need to do is clean up the neighborhood so other businesses can come in, and downtown Atlanta can prosper," Long told WSB.

According to WSB-TV, Long, who has been on the job for about a year, carries a firearm, a Taser stun gun and a Gro-Pro camera mounted on a bulletproof vest for protection.

The manager became the recipient of some unexpected fame last week when a few of his videos, some of them months old, were uploaded to Reddit and went viral.

A prominent Reddit user, "RyuKenya," has since set up a fundraising drive on CrowdTilt to benefit Long after viewing his videos and meeting with him, the Daily Dot reports. The crowd-sourced campaign to "enable [Long] to get better and more gear" had received more than $22,000 in donations as of Monday afternoon.

"I'm always concerned with my safety, but not to the point where I won't act," Long said in an interview with Right This Minute.

But not everyone is happy with Long's stance on security. In an update posted to the subreddit "JusticePorn" on Sunday, "RyuKenya" told the community:

I have also been getting a lot of hate mail saying that I am supporting a vigilante and that I should have spent my time campaigning for better causes and that he is a rogue mall cop on a power trip. Worse things have been said to me.

In one controversial video, a woman who becomes involved in an altercation with Long is stunned with a Taser in front of small children. (Warning: linked video contains violence and graphic language.)

Although the circumstances surrounding the incident aren't clear from the video, the woman was arrested and charged with "disorderly conduct... criminal trespass, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and simple battery," according to WSB.

In 2009, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported a slight decrease in crime in the downtown area due to a "beefed up" police presence, but residents interviewed by WBS in 2013 said that crime remains a problem.

A SpotCrime crime map for downtown Atlanta lists 300 reported crimes in the area since the beginning of 2013.

The Huffington Post called the Atlanta Police Department for comment about crime in the area, but requests were not returned as of press time.

I will grant it has been 21 years since I lived in the Atlanta area, but when I was there, the downtown had a simple dividing line. We'll stick with "trashy" and "nice" people labels here, and "nice" people never, ever went south of the state capital building or Underground Atlanta. Crime north of that line existed, but if you were alert and in a group of 2 or 3, you wouldn't have trouble. South of the line "nice" people were targets. I rather wonder if that has changed in the intervening 20+ years?

Bob: Where does that place (trashy or nice) the College Football Hall of Fame located close to the Aquarium?

I was in Atlanta for a convention just after the Hall of Shame announced they had milked South Bend for every penny and were going to move. The location that they were showing was across from what is now known as "Centennial Park", or the Olympic Park where the infamous bomb went off. This is in the nominally "safer" part of the city by the upscale hotels, convention center and so forth.
