Obnoxious Cheering at Graduations

Obnoxious Cheering at Graduations

Some people do not think that rules apply to them and ruin it for everyone else. I, personally, am glad that they are fining these obnoxious people. They are warned at the beginning, they continue to scream and act the fools, and could care less about others listening and hearing their own relatives names called.

Four People Charged For Cheering At Mississippi High School Graduation

Four people were charged with disturbing the peace after cheering too loudly at a high school graduation ceremony in Senatobia, Miss., Memphis television station WREG reported on Tuesday.

Police at Northwest Mississippi Community College, where the ceremony was held, told WREG that Senatobia Municipal School District Superintendent Jay Foster, told attendees at the ceremony to refrain from cheering and applause until the end of the ceremony.

Four people, including Ursula Miller and Henry Walker (pictured above), both of whom are black, were asked to leave the ceremony after cheering on the graduates.

When Lanarcia Walker graduated, Miller yelled out her niece's name.

"When she went across the stage I just called her name out. ‘Lakaydra’. Just like that," Miller told WREG.

And Walker cheered and waved a towel as Lanarcia graduated, according to Lanarcia's mother, Linda Walker.

"He said ‘you did it baby’, waved his towel and went out the door," she said.

A few days after the ceremony, those asked to leave for cheering were served with arrest warrants.

Foster (pictured on the right), who is white, pressed disturbing the peace charges against the attendees by filing an affidavit with the county Justice Court, which issued arrest warrants, the police and court clerk told TPM.

"Why assign papers on someone? We don’t have money for anything like that," Linda Walker said about the arrest warrants.

The four individuals charged are expected to appear in court on June 9, according to WREG.

“It’s crazy,” Henry Walker told the station. “The fact that I might have to bond out of jail, pay court costs, or a $500 fine for expressing my love, it’s ridiculous man. It’s ridiculous.”

Comments from the story;

The proper thing is for police there to escort them out. The principle likely pressed charges to set an example, but if that was the plan he should have said that anyone who yelled during the ceremony would be charged with disturbing the peace. All they said was that the people would be escorted out, which is fine. But if you plan to make an arrest, you warn people ahead of time that they may be arrested.

On the other hand why do people feel the need to think the whole ceremony revolves only around their family members? Why can't people just stfu while the names are being read. Now anyone who videotaped this has to hear this icicle yelling like a clown, if you watch the tape the place is quiet and he comes running down the stairs yelling, causing everyone to turn around with "what the hell is your problem" looks on their faces. Plus graduating high school is more of a milestone, not some huge accomplishment. The kid did not get a Masters or a PHD. It's a damn HS diploma. Plus students are generally embarrassed when their relatives make fools of themselves like that.

I just got home from my son's H.S. graduation tonite. Some of the people really do seem to think that the ceremony is their private noise fest and seem delighted that their screaming and their goddamn air-horns disturb the folks next to them. I get that many of these kids are the first in their family, etc, etc, but this piece is not about race or class-- it is about selfishly hijacking the ceremony and ruining it for others; What about live and let live? What about some tolerance for the "non-rowdies"? And whoever orchestrated these arrests is a caca and a bully and should be sued into dire poverty and oblivion.

I have had to endure these circuses they call graduation ceremonies for far too many family members over the past years. I have observed that the volume and obnoxiousness of some guests is increasingly annoying and most likely embarrassing for the graduate. Some of the cheering is pretty crass. And officials do tell the crowd to please not yell and disrupt because that affects the kids walking before and after the "darling celebrity."

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that this is a black/white issue. But an arrest is absurd.

Except if you watch the tape, it was very quiet because people were asked to be quiet until all the names were read. The cheering follows that, and you can be as loud as you want then. How hard is this? If you let one person yell during name calling, then everyone yells, and no one hears anything. How about some respect for the KIDS? How would you like it if your family played the video of you graduating, and your name could not be heard because some icicle was yelling?

Oh please, look at the tape. There are LOTS of black families there. None of them were hollering. So, what made these people so special? Oh, they should not have been arrested, that is nuts. But what the hell makes them above all the rest? If everyone did what they did, you would not hear the names being called. Respect the kids. ALL of them. When it's done, THEN you cheer and holler, and that is GREAT.
