Due to a declaration of a state of emergency by city and county officials, classes are canceled and the University will be closed beginning at noon today (Monday) through 6 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday).

Information will be forthcoming regarding the availability of the dining halls.

The University will continue to communicate with local government leaders and monitor the weather to determine when to reopen.

BREAKING: South Bend police searching for missing baby

South Bend police have asked media to pass on this information immediately. Their release, issued Sunday just before 6:30 p.m., is as follows:

"SBPD looking for missing 9-month-old female white, one: Bethany Ann Gipperich.

"Last seen Friday, Feb. 14, 2014 in the company of a female named 'Amber.'

"Mother of this child, 31-year-old Heather Gipperich was listed as a missing person, but has been found. Whereabouts of the baby are unknown.

"Call 911 if anyone knows where this child may be located."

Captain Phil Trent with South Bend police tells us the mother, who lives in Park Jefferson Apartments, has "been out of it" for the last several days and just reappeared at her mother's house yesterday without the baby.

The mother is reportedly suffering from various personal issues and is unsure of where the child is -- just that the baby was last seen with her friend "Amber."

Trent says that this Amber is not likely to hurt the child, but may not be qualified/responsible enough to take care of her. They have no other information about who Amber is or where she is.

Trent says the mother likely did not travel far from the South Bend area.

This is not to be treated as a kidnapping case, but as a form of child abandonment/endangerment, according to Trent.

Police are working furiously to find this child -- and hope to get more information through interviews.

Captain Phil Trent of the South Bend Police Department just released this statement on the 9-month-old child who was found safe tonight after going missing:

"The missing 9 m/o Bethany Gipperich has been located in Elkhart with the assistance of EPD. Department of Child Services officials have been working the case with police throughout the evening and are taking custody of the child. The child in good health and we are sorting out the details. Investigators are en route to Elkhart at this time to gather additional information."

While we must assume that there will be many difficult chapters ahead for young Bethany, at least this one has a happy ending.

High voltage line, traffic signals come down at busy South Bend intersection

The line failure is being blamed on the extreme cold. Traffic has been detoured and it has created some significant delays for drivers.
South Bend, Ind. Crews are working at the intersection of S.R. 23 and Edison Rd. where a high voltage line failed and came down early Thursday morning in South Bend, taking the traffic signals with it.

This all happened just after 5 a.m. Indiana Michigan Power has been working to de-energize the line and then crews will remove the signals. The intersection will become a four-way stop with stop signs until the Indiana Department of Transportation can repair those signals; it is a state-owned/managed intersection. According to the South Bend mayor's office, there are significant repairs needed so it could be a while.

The line failure is being blamed on the extreme cold. Traffic has been detoured and it has created some significant delays for drivers. Power was not affected to nearby homes.

An official at the scene told our reporter they’re thankful no one was hurt because this could have been a lot worse. We’re also told the same thing happened about 2 years ago at the same intersection with a different line.

Notre Dame sophomore found dead at home

The University of Notre Dame announced a sophomore was found dead in his off-campus home Friday afternoon.

The business student, 21-year-old Daniel Kim, was from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of Daniel's passing and extend our condolences to his family and friends,” Father Jenkins said. “My prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

Tests pending in ND student’s death

ROSELAND — Authorities are waiting for toxicology test results to determine what led to the death of a University of Notre Dame sophomore Friday.
Daniel Kim, 21, was found dead early Friday afternoon at his off-campus residence in the 100 block of Clancy Street, just west of Indiana 933 in Roseland, according to St. Joseph County police logs.
Michael O’Connell, a deputy county coroner, said an autopsy was conducted Friday, but toxicology results would likely be required to determine exactly how Kim died. Those results could take several weeks. However, O’Connell said Kim’s death was not a homicide or suicide.
The Roseland Police Department responded to the scene, but Sgt. Tim Witham would not release any information about the case, saying the Notre Dame Security Police Department has since taken control of the investigation.
Kim, a native of Upper Saddle River, N.J., was a business student and member of the Notre Dame fencing team, the university said in a statement.

7-year-old girl reportedly abducted from South Bend neighborhood

South Bend Police are searching a west side neighborhood after they were told a 7-year-old girl was taken by a black man with a grey beard.

The alleged abduction happened shortly before 1:45 p.m.

A search perimeter has been set up from Meade on the West, Olive on the East, Prast to the North and Westmoor to the South. That's near Kennedy Park and Kennedy Primary. Police are going door to door.

The girl has dark, curly hair with blond streaks. She was last seen wearing a pink shirt, jean shorts and sparkly sandals.

The suspect is described as a tall black male with a beard and between the age of 30 and 40. He's wearing a black shirt and jeans.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Fir-University Dr. intersection to close Monday
WSBT-TV Report

A heavily-traveled stretch of road in Mishawaka is due to close Monday. The intersection of Fir and University Drive will be closing for construction.

In fact, Fir between Cleveland and the Toll Road bridge will also be closed.

Detour signs will be posted.

Local traffic will be able to access University Drive from Main Street and Fir will be accessible from Douglas Road.

The roads should be back open by the end of August.
