Potholes start popping up

Now that the weather is starting to thaw, drivers can expect other problems. Potholes are starting to pop up all over Michiana.

Street crews are trying to stay ahead of the problem before it gets out of hand.

Monday crews were hard at work from the city of South Bend.

A machine called the “roadpatcher” was being used to easily patch potholes. The driver doesn't even have to get out of the truck to fix the holes.

Several other street and highway departments around Michiana are doing the same.

They’ve been taking advantage of Monday's warmer weather and repairing chuckholes before too many cars are damaged.

“I've noticed a lot of potholes out here,” says South Bend driver Charlie Easton Jr. “But I noticed they were trying to work on them. But this time of the year potholes are pretty bad.”

Workers on the Toll Road were busy patching this morning also. Plus at IN-DOT, crews might be able to do some patching later this week if Michiana sees another warm-up.

Potholes are starting to pop up? What town have you been driving in? Potholes have been here.

"Starting to pop up"? Hell, 2/3 of them weren't fixed from last year's January thaw! Anyone ever drive down East Pendle St. in Roseland?? You've got to drive like a plastered drunk to avoid car-swallowing craters!

As the ice and snow of winter continue to melt, the potholes across Michiana's roads have become more noticeable.

There isn't much we can do about the freezing and thawing that causes the problem, but you can help roads crews by identifying bad areas.

You can also avoid costly repair bills by avoiding the worst stretches of road.

We're working to develop a list of Michiana's deepest and most dangerous potholes, but we need your help. If you know of a particularly bad pothole around your neighborhood, please let us know!

You can leave us a message below in the comment section, over here in this post on our Facebook page, or on Twitter. If you've recently taken a picture of a bad pothole, be sure to include it! Let us know exactly where the problem area is located, and we'll share the worst spots on NewsCenter 16.
