MARYSVILLE, Ohio -- Federal and local authorities continue to investigate the Ohio crash of a small plane that killed the two Indiana men flying to Pennsylvania.

The Highway Patrol says 67-year-old pilot Arthur Potter of Greenwood, Ind., and 55-year-old passenger Frank Granato of Carmel, Ind., died in the crash yesterday in Union County in central Ohio.

Jerome Township Fire Chief Scott Skeldon says a search began after the plane failed to make a scheduled refueling stop at the Union County Airport.

The red single-engine 2007 Evektor-Aerotechnik SportStar Plus was found in a wooded area about 8:30 p.m.

The patrol says it was owned by Greenwood Flying Club LLC of Indianapolis.

There is a real glut of these little Czech designs on the market. I have looked most of them over very carefully and have never been able to talk myself into thinking that flying one of them would be a good idea. They skirt Part 23 certification by fitting into the Light sport category. They have all the right parts and materials but every one I have seen looked like it was built on a Monday morning by an alcoholic who got a bonus on Friday. Several flight clubs and schools are now using them strictly because in this economy they cannot afford conventional certified aircraft. It's a shame Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Mooney or American Champion cannot compete labor wise. I fly to Greenwood a few times a year. I probably had breakfast with those guys but didn't know them by name.
Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.
