5:15 p.m. update: Most the victims in a Northeastside bus accident are young people from Colonial Hills Baptist Church, returning from a summer camp, the Indianapolis Fire Department reported.


A total of 12 ambulances have been used so far to transport the injured from the accident near 96th Street and Keystone Avenue. The injured include both adults and children, according to the fire department.

Fire officials confirm three deaths in the accident.


Earlier: A bus accident has been reported near 96th Street and Keystone Avenue. Three deaths and at least five critical injuries have been reported; more than a dozen other passengers have suffered some injury, according to initial police reports.

The large passenger bus overturned on its side near the I-465 overpass, leaving passengers trapped inside. Indianapolis Fire Department rescue crews now report that all of the trapped have been extricated.


The accident occurred about 4:15 p.m., and police and rescue workers are still determining the extent of the injuries. Police are closing streets in the area.

According to initial reports, about 40 people were on the bus. The injured are being transported to area hospitals; at least one is being airlifted.

Families of the injured are being gathered at a nearby church.
