SOUTH BEND -

WSBT has learned that South Bend officer Derek Dieter is retiring from the police force today.

His son, Gehrig Dieter, posted the news Saturday on Twitter.
"Congrats to my dad who is retiring today after 39 years of being a police officer. There's no one that worked harder than him during those 39 years. I wouldn't be where I am today without his hard work," Dieter's son wrote.

Dieter currently holds a position as the Vice President of the City Council.

There is no word on his plans after retiring.

I would never think of questioning someone like DD if he quotes those stats. Then he must have done all that.

DD has been a better than average officer and way better than average Council member. Perhaps he'll jump parties and run against Prince Pete for Mayor as a Republican.
