Mental patient charged in Saint Mary's student stabbing

Dwayne Newsom, charged in the stabbing of a Saint Mary's College student

SOUTH BEND — A 43-year-old South Bend resident faces attempted murder and other charges related to the stabbing of a Saint Mary's College student who was volunteering at Broadway Christian Paris
h.

Dwayne Newsom was also charged Thursday with aggravated battery and battery by means of a deadly weapon. He is being held without bond in the St. Joseph County Jail. His bail hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday. The St. Joseph County prosecutor is requesting the judge set a cash bond of $50,000.

On Tuesday, South Bend police responded to the Broadway Christian Church near the intersection of Carroll and Broadway streets on reports of a stabbing. Officers were told a woman was stabbed and the male suspect fled the building. Witnesses followed the man to a house in the 1400 block of South High Street. Officers set up a perimeter and used a squad car's PA system to order the suspect out of the home. In less than a minute, the suspect came out and was detained.

The man was identified as Newsom, and two witnesses who followed him to the South High Street home confirmed to police he was the one who attacked the woman, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The 22-year-old victim, Jovita Lledo, is in a group participating in a long-standing community nursing placement program at the church. Doctors said the the woman sustained potential life-threatening injuries but that quick action by police saved her life, according a statement by Ken Garcia, spokesman for the South Bend Police Department.

Lledo told investigators she was sitting at a table with other nurse volunteers when Newsom came up from behind her and stabbed her one time in the right side of the stomach with a large knife, according to court documents. Lledo underwent surgery to repair internal injuries from the stabbing. She is expected to recover.

Police say Newsom admitted to stabbing Lledo. Newsom allegedly told investigators he left the High Street house, which is owned by his mother, that morning armed with a knife and a hammer, went to the church and performed a “mind search” of the people in the room.

Police say Newsom told them his only option was to stab or shoot the woman because she had tried to rape him and "she ain’t gonna let (him) out of the hotel room."

Newsom allegedly told police he was considering killing the woman but then told himself all he needed to do was stab her once and leave her there. Newsom reportedly did not say anything to the victim before or during the attack.

Police say that when they asked him about medications, Newsom said he scammed his way onto Social Security by telling the doctor he was hearing voices even though he never actually heard voices. Police claim Newsom said he last took the medication one or two months ago because it made him feel “overdosed."

MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) - Mishawaka police evacuated the area around Grape Road and Indian Ridge Boulevard after two pipe bombs were found Monday morning.

The devices were found in the 5700 block of Grape Road near the McDonald's.

Indian Ridge Boulevard was blocked between Grape Road and Main Street as the two devices were destroyed.

"It's nothing we deal with on a normal basis, so it's better to be on the safe side. Do more than you have to," Mishawaka Police Chief Ken Witowski said.

The road was re-opened shortly after 11 a.m.

One person, working near where the bombs were found, explains what he was told during and after he was evacuated.

"The landlord came running into the building and said the bomb squad was going to be there and we knew we were going to get evacuated," Dan said.

Mishawaka police, South Bend police and bomb squad, and the ATF responded to the scene. Officers safely destroyed the bombs and say they are continuing to investigate.

Police plead for information about South Bend shooting that injured six
on Sunday shooting
By Caleb Bauer South Bend Tribune Mar 13, 2018 Updated 5 hrs ago (0)

ImageSOUTH BEND — Anyone listening to a police scanner early Sunday morning heard that things went violently wrong at a party on East Dayton Street. When the bullets stopped flying, six people had been shot.

An officer on scene called for multiple ambulances as screams could be heard in the background. All six victims survived the shooting, but police say they have faced “extremely poor cooperation” from witnesses and others who may be able to help bring the shooter or shooters to justice.

In a press conference Monday afternoon, South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski pleaded for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and speak with police to aid the ongoing investigation.

“The bottom line is, we need cooperation,” Ruszkowski said. “We are a part of this community, not apart from the community. We need the help.”

Since the shooting, four victims have been released from the hospital.

The victims of the shootings included Carlton Wells, MacKayla Smith, Christina Phillips, Selena Aguilar and two juveniles.

Ruszkowski said he “believes there was more than one person” who pulling triggers Sunday.

So far, police have no one in custody related to the case but do have a number of persons of interest. But interviews with witnesses have left police with conflicting stories about who may have been involved.

Police Capt. Dan Skibins said the department believes the shooting “may be gang-related.”

The department has impounded a pair of vehicles, recovered 50 items of evidence and taken more than 600 photos of the crime scene, where more than 40 people were gathered at a party. Sunday was the first time police had been called to the 830 E. Dayton address in at least two years, they say.

“You would think at this point in time, we would have a whole lot more cooperation,” Ruzskowski said. “But that hasn’t happened.”

“We’re tired of taping off crime scenes, visiting people in hospitals and notifying next of kin about something disastrous that’s happened that somebody made a conscious decision to pull that trigger.”

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact South Bend Police at 574-235-9201 or call Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP
