SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Police responded Wednesday night after a teen was found shot just south of downtown South Bend. Officers on the scene said the shooting actually happened elsewhere.

The shooting happened around 10:22 p.m., and police were dispatched to a gas station near the intersection of West Monroe Street and South Michigan Street, which is where the car reportedly containing the victim wound up.

The shooting itself happened on South Bend's south side, police said. Officers initially responded to a report of shots fired in the area of East Ewing Avenue and Michigan Street.

The 17-year-old victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Police said he suffered a gunshot wound to his upper leg that was not considered life-threatening.

It appears shots were fired at the vehicle that was found at the gas station. It was not immediately clear if the victim was in the vehicle when he was shot.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact the South Bend Police Department or Michiana Crime Stoppers.
