SOUTH BEND, Ind.--- South Bend Police have arrested a man on charges of murder after a shooting on Sunday left one man dead.

Demetrius L. Murray was arrested and charged with murder, felony murder and robbery on Monday.

If convicted on all charges Murray faces up to 81 years in prison.

The shooting occurred in the 400 block of S. 25th Street in the Cedar Glen apartment complex near the intersection of 26th Street and Jefferson Blvd.

Deonta Horst, 18, died from a single gunshot wound to the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Zachariah Walker, a tenant at the apartment complex stated to officers that he and Roemello "Mello" Murray, Deonta's brother, had discussed a marijuana sale. Mello had stated that he would send a 3rd party over to buy marijuana from Walker.

Walker said that a man, later identified as Demetrius Murray, came to the door of his apartment around 4 p.m. identifying himself as "Mello's guy."

When Walker let him in Murray pulled out a gun and put it to Murray's head demanding marijuana and money. Murray then took money and marijuana from Walker and tried to exit the apartment.

When Murray got to the door Horst, wearing a ski mask and holding a handgun, suddenly appeared. Murray then fired his gun, and Horst fell to the ground.

Murray then fled the scene.

Police during the course of the investigation were able to piece together information showing that Murray and Horst knew each other previously.

Walker was also able to pick Murray out of a photo line up.

Prosecutor-elect Ken Cotter credits detectives who worked overnight to make an arrest, and track down evidence.

Murray is currently being held in the St. Joseph County Jail.

Roemello Murray has been arrested on assisting a criminal.

The manager of Cedar Glen Apartments released this statement on Monday:

"Our thoughts are with the victim’s family as they grieve for their loved one following this senseless loss of a young life. We have made our staff and records available to assist law enforcement in apprehending and prosecuting the person responsible for this crime. As has been our practice since taking over management at Cedar Glen, as shown by the significant reduction in public safety issues, we will continue to thoroughly, but fairly, screen potential residents and to proactively seek advice from the South Bend Police Department on what we can do to ensure the safety of our community."
