SOUTH BEND — Family and friends of Eric Logan, the man shot and killed by a police officer in June, are asking for the officer to stop being paid while the investigation is ongoing. :naughty: :hand:

Logan, a 54-year-old black man, was shot and killed by Sgt. Ryan O'Neill, a white police officer. Following the shooting, O'Neill was placed on leave with pay pending the outcome of a criminal and internal investigation.

Tuesday, community members gathered to present a petition asking South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg to discontinue the officer's pay while the investigation is going on.

"It's unfair to the Logan family and it's unfair to the tax payers that he's getting paid after taking a life from the community," Vernado Malone, a friend of the Logan family, said at the news conference.

Ultimately, it's the Board of Public Safety that has the authority to decide to change O'Neill's leave status. South Bend Police Chief Scott Ruszkowski can make a recommendation to the board about what actions he believes should be taken.

The board would have to have a hearing to make the change, which will require there to be evidence presented. But whatever evidence there may be, is currently tied up in the special prosecutor's investigation, a city spokesman said.

"This case will be evaluated for discipline at the conclusion of the special prosecutor and internal affairs investigations," the spokesman said in a statement.

Malone said he would like an answer from the mayor within 48 hours.

"This is the time, Mayor Pete, to step up and make your own demands," Malone said.
