Five stabbed in South Bend

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide is investigating after five people were stabbed in a South Bend home Thursday night.

Police say a call came in around 9:40 p.m. for a home invasion in the 1000 block of North Michigan Street.

When they arrived, the suspects were attempting to flee the scene.

Armed with assault weapons, officers were able to apprehend five young adults and took them in for questioning.

Meanwhile, other officers found five stabbing victims inside the home.

They range in age from a teen to an elderly adult; their injuries range from superficial to life-threatening.

All five victims were transported to the hospital via ambulance.

Police say there were other people inside the home during the attempted burglary who escaped unharmed.

"There were other individuals that hid in the house consisting of young adults, as well as an adult," said South Bend Police Division Chief Gary Horvath. "They were able to use a cell phone to call authorities. That's why we put it out as a burglary in progress. Officers were able to come here based on the fact there were other individuals in the house that weren't harmed that were able to call for assistance."

Police believe they've caught all of the suspects involved with the stabbing.

One reportedly tried to flee by jumping out of one of the home's windows.

Because of the extent of some of the victims' injuries, South Bend Police turned the scene over the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide, who continue to investigate.

5 stabbed in South Bend break-in

7:16 a.m. EST, December 28, 2012

We have new information on a violent break-in that happened last night in South Bend.

Five people were stabbed at a home in the 1000 block of North Michigan Street. The injuries range from superficial cuts to at least one person critically wounded.

Investigators say one person attacked is elderly and another is a teenager. Their exact ages are unknown at this time. They were all taken to the hospital.

The St. Joseph Metro Homicide Unit is in charge of the investigation because of the life-threatening injury.

Five people suspected in the crime are in custody this morning. South Bend Police Division Chief Gary Horvath described them as "young adults".

Officers caught them trying to run away from the scene.

Horvath says it's not clear right now if the suspects knew the victims.

“Right now it's way too early in the investigation,” said Division Chief Gary Horvath. “Our major concern is the welfare of the individuals in the house as well as collecting the evidence for prosecution in this case.”

Five people were stabbed at a home

I'm sure gun laws had a lot to do preventing these people from getting shot instead. This may be the only instance in America where a gang of thugs used knives. Diane Feinstein, Bloomberg, Rahm Emanuel, Chuck Schummer, et.al. have been vindicated.*

Give me a break Dunk. Gun control worked. These criminals used knives instead of guns which follows the gun control laws.   There are conflicting reports that at least one of them had a gun with them.

This is absolutely terrifying, I hope these rotten bastards get what they have coming. I have heard they may be related somehow to the victims. How can I find the full rap sheet for Walter?

Quoting SB Tribune:
Murder charges filed against five suspects in home invasion

TOM MOOR
South Bend Tribune
5:21 p.m. EST, January 7, 2013

SOUTH BEND — Additional charges of murder were filed today against five suspects accused of breaking into a home last month on North Michigan Street and injuring five people, one of whom died Saturday.

Sandra Price, who suffered stab wounds in her neck during the Dec. 27 home invasion at 1022 N. Michigan, died from her injuries on Saturday night, police said.

Her husband, Kent Price, also suffered serious cuts to the neck, but has since been released from the hospital, Lt. Dave Wells, assistant commander of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, said Monday.

Walter Neely, 47; Khawana Lamar, 21; Lee Griffin, 19; Nate Coley, 18; and Gemari Cotton, 17, are accused of robbing and stabbing four of the occupants. On Monday, prosecutors charged each suspect with two counts of murder, one filed to reflect it was committed during a burglary and the other to reflect a robbery.

Previously, each suspect was charged with two counts of robbery and three counts of burglary, all Class A felonies.

Sandra Price died from “multiple sharp-edge injuries,” police said, including stab wounds to the neck area.

Five men were arrested by police as they were leaving the house after being called by a resident of the home, who was upstairs when the attack occurred. Several of the suspects were carrying items from the home when police arrived, according to court documents.

Also inside the house was Kent Price’s daughter, another adult woman and her two children. The mother and one of her children had been cut, while the second child had been struck with a blunt instrument, police said. The mother and two children were treated and released at a hospital.

Wells declined to comment on whether the homeowners knew the suspects, or if the home invasion was random.

“We’re not going to talk about that,” Wells said. “We’re still working on it.”

The other adult woman at the house at the time told police she brought her two children over to the home to visit the Prices.

She told police that five men that she did not know broke into the home and demanded money.

One of the men was carrying a gun and the other a knife. One of the assailants began cutting Kent and Sandra Price, the other woman and her son with the knife.

Kent Price’s daughter was upstairs at the time and called 911, leading to the arrests.

The suspects are expected to be back in court Jan. 14 for their initial hearing.

All are being held in the St. Joseph County Jail on $1 million bond.

Authorities made note of Neely’s criminal history. He was convicted on March 12, 1990, of dealing in a sawed off shotgun, a Class D felony, and convicted on Nov. 15, 2006, of possession of cocaine, a Class D felony, and carrying a handgun without a permit with a prior felony conviction, a Class C felony.
