The company that operates the Indiana Toll Road filed for bankruptcy on Sunday, though Indiana Gov. Mike Pence said in a statement Monday drivers of the route through northern Indiana can expect "business as usual."
Debt-ridden ITR Commission Co., a spawn of the Spanish-Australian company Cintra-Macquarie, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Chicago in a prepackaged plan to restructure its approximate $6 billion debt.
The company in 2006 paid $3.8 billion for a 75-year lease of the road that runs between the Illinois and Ohio state lines, but the toll revenue failed to meet company expectations.
Indiana Finance Authority Director Kendra York said in a statement ITR Commission Co. will continue to manage the toll road through the bankruptcy process. The Finance Authority must also approve any potential sale of the lease.
“The IFA has been aware of negotiations between the operator and its lenders, so we anticipated this could be a possibility,” Pence said in the statement. “But Hoosiers can expect business as usual on the Indiana Toll Road.”

Sale of Toll Road operations for 75 years in 2006 was a bad deal for northern Indiana. It just got worse.
...
Now, we are in this together, Toll Road bankruptcy. The road will stay open.

I'm trying to figure out how Indiana getting $4 billion and the lease owner filing bankruptcy is bad for Indiana?
Do we suddenly have to give the $4 billion back?
Does the toll road get closed and shredded?

Or... do we keep the $4 billion and retain a toll road that has had most or all of its infrastructure upgraded, and toll rates will increase like they were going to anyway?
How is this NOT a win-win for our state?

If Indiana winds up looking for a new leasee, will "Real Estate professional" John Piraccini represent the State? As his webpage says "My business is about long lasting relationships; I am here to offer expert real estate guidance based on the highest professional & ethical standards." John specializes in "commercial real estate including retail, land, industrial, office."

A Glenview woman died in a two-vehicle crash on the Indiana Toll Road Tuesday morning after she crossed over a median into oncoming traffic.

Emma Beth Pincus Hartman, 18, was driving a Jeep east-bound on I-80/90 just east of the Indiana/Illinois state line when her vehicle left the roadway. The Jeep crossed over the median, entered the west-bound lane and was hit by a semi truck loaded with bottles of liquor, according to Indiana state police. The truck broadsided the Jeep, hitting it on the driver's side.

Hartman was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy with the Lake County coroner's office.
Traffic was temporarily diverted at Indianapolis Boulevard due to the crash, but all lanes were reopened as of 3 p.m.

It all took place in the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road, over the bridge near mile marker 77.
An Indiana State Trooper was involved in a multiple-vehicle accident Thursday, shortly after noon.

It all took place in the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road, near mile marker 77.

As a vehicle crossed the bridge over the St. Joseph River,
the driver lost control and spun out.

The State Trooper approached with lights on, in an attempt to help the driver. At that point, a third vehicle struck the officer's car, pushing it into the first vehicle.

There were no life-threatening injuries, but the officer and some of the vehicles' occupants were transported to a local hospital.
